Subject: Making Space for What Truly Matters

2 days ago I started a 16-month Spiritual Direction program, and on the first day, one of the teachers said this:“You said yes. You followed a nudge. You made a commitment—a financial, time, and energy commitment. What might you need to make less of a priority so that this can be a priority for you?”
I appreciated the powerful reminder that we cannot do everything all at once. We can’t keep adding new habits, new commitments and new goals to our to-do list without creating space for them. It's not always about doing more.
It's about letting go of the non-essentials, recognizing what no longer serves you, and creating the capacity to fully show up for what you’ve chosen. Whether it’s an old habit, a recurring distraction or something you’ve outgrown, consider the following adjustments for shifting priorities:
Limit after-work social engagements to ensure you have time for an evening exercise session or time to relax.
Cut back on social media time to go to bed earlier and prioritize better sleep.
Put boundaries around work emails or after-hours calls to dedicate time to family or rest.
Skip a less essential errand or task to focus on your mental or emotional well-being through mindfulness or meditation.
So, as you reflect on your current priorities and commitments, consider: What can I release in this season of my life to honor a current priority?
